Wind Energy and its subsidy

The Conservative Party's new environmental report proposes withdrawing the Renewables Obligation subsidy from onshore wind farms.

The British Wind Energy Association says that these proposals would end all support for onshore wind power and cripple the UK wind industry.

This means, presumably, that wind power is only economic because of the massive subsidy supporting it.

It would be interesting to know why wind energy does not have to follow the normal rules of commerce.
