Nobel Prizewinner Ivar Giaever Resigns from American Physical Society

The Nobel Prizewinner, physicist Ivar Giaever, has resigned from the American Physical Society. His resignation letter explains why he was unable to renew his membership: he could not accept the APS policy statement attributing global warming to man-made carbon dioxide emissions.

"....I did not renew because I cannot live with the statement:

The evidence is incontrovertible: global warming is occurring. If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.”

Dr Giaever had asked for the word “incontrovertible” to be removed from the statement.

The APS refused.

His reply:

“In the APS it is OK to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is incontrovertible?”

This follows the high profile resignation of Hal Lewis (q.v.) from the APS about a year ago, over the same issue.
